Our Summer Vacation Day 2

Day 2 of the trip brought more time in the lazy river, the pools and the beach. I am not a beach person, at all. I like to sit out of the balcony and enjoy the breeze, but the sand...no thanks. I am not much of a swimming person either, although I do enjoy a lazy river. This lazy river was way too shallow. It was 1 1/2 feel deep and my knees were dragging the bottom as I floated around hanging on to the tube. Phillip and the girls were eager to hit the beach. The condo was across the highway from the beach, so we drove up the road a bit to a beach just across the Florida state line. My plan was to drive into Pensacola and hit a big JoAnn's for some yarn I can't find locally. See we all were doing something we loved. Me = yarn. Them = beach. Win = win. I dropped them off and hit the road. The directions I had were not to best, but I found my spot and returned later to pick them up. There was some sun burn, because some people wanted to apply their own sunscreen, instead of letting me do it. I am not naming names. I don't have any beach pics yet. They are still on the water camera we bought and will posted later.

After lunch and a brief siesta, the girls and Phillip again hit the pools and lazy river. I hung out on the balcony and knit. Again, everyone was happy. We went to Jake's Grill for dinner. We used to eat there long ago, but was definitely not as good as we remembered. The restaurant was wiped out in Hurricane Ivan and was rebuilt. We also think it changed ownership as well and thus the difference in the menu, etc.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day to Phillip. I still promise to be by your side in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, and in good times and bad. I love you.

The Year in Review

2010 was an interesting year to be sure. Many new and wonderful. Others not so hot. Here is a little taste of the good and the bad.

1. Robyn graduated from high school. We are so proud of her. She graduated 41st out of 489. Amazing. She is way smarter that I am. She is off to college now and experiencing college life.

2. Cara started playing the guitar. Phillip bought a guitar for me a year ago and I had never gotten around to playing it. Cara said she was interested in taking lessons. She is wonderful. I love listening to her although she does not like it.

3. Phillip continues to be busy at work. Good for us, but bad for his clients. People are still declaring bankruptcy big time.

4. I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I kinda felt I would get it and worried about it for years ever since a scare in 1988. It was a bit freeing to get it out there, face it and then kick it to the curb. The biggest pluses? No more mammograms and I had lots of time to knit.

1. I found out I had breast cancer. In the deepest darkest parts of my my mind, I knew I would get this one day. Chemo lasted 5 months. I lost my hair, my sense of taste (for a while), and have messed up finger and toe nails. I still have some neuropathy in my feet and a some of my fingers. I sure hope that gets better.

2. Robyn went to college. I know this is a good thing, but I miss her...even the messes she makes. Five hours away is too far for me to just jump in a car and go and see her. That fact would be on her "good" list.

3. I can't think of a #3. This year wasn't bad at all if you take out the cancer stuff. We are fortunate to have so much and have much to be thankful for. Maybe this should move up to the "good" list and be #5 there :D

A Tick !!!

Never let it be said that Phillip and I have great eyesight. Tonight, I was rubbing Skittles tummy. I saw this black thing. It looked like a tick. From all angles, it was a tick. I got Phillip. Same diagnosis. We got Robyn. She worked at a pet shop so she was the family expert. While I googled "tick removal" Phillip and Robyn discussed their options. Skittles was thrilled to have so many people giving her attention and giving her love. We got the glass of alcohol to kill the tick ready and the trust tweezers were in hand. Phillip tries to grab it but cannot get a good grip. Robyn starts to think it was not a tick after all. She takes hold of the tweezers and pulls off...a glob of dirt. I am thinking it must have some pine tar mixed in with the mud because it did not break down even spending the night in the glass of alcohol. So there you have it. Phillip and I are blind and Skittles got her attention. Her plan worked.

Who Dat Hat

Behold. This is my first entry in the Ravelympics event, Hat Halfpipe. Phillip liked the black and gold hat I made him earlier, but it seemed to fit a bit wonky at the top. I was thinking that might happen when I finished it. So I found another pattern and gave it a try. I love how this hat works up. I like how it looks from the top. It is very stretchy and very easy to knit. I will definitely make more of these down the road.

P.S. This is his Valentine's gift.

Phillip's Lid

Phillip decided he wanted a hat and knew exactly who to come to get get one made. He wanted one in Saints colors. Having the "small" amount of yarn I have (NOT!), I was able to accept his request. I found a pattern that was a little different than the one I usually made. Different in the way it decreased at the crown. I am not thrilled with the crown, but Phillip is happy with it. I think I will go back to old trusty. That hat never lets me down.

Lady in Red

Red accessories always crack me up. Phillip has this thing about not wanting any of us wearing red shoes, earrings, lipstick, and the like at the same time. It is something that I always found funny. It is interesting to think about the things that drive us crazy or make us uncomfortable. Most of the time, it is easy to see the reason behind the negative feelings. Sometimes, you can't put your finger on why something bugs you. You just know it does. I would love to know why this bothers him, but I am not sure I really want to know.

I Married Mr. Whipple

Phillip has always had a heavy beard. In the thousands of years I have been married to him, I have never seen him with a beard or mustache. I have seen an old picture BM (before Merry he calls it) of him with the stash. The girls and I talked him into growing one again. He had it for a week before he shaved it off. He was so worried about it. He asked me every day before going to work if I thought it was running clients off. All I could think of was how much he looked like Mr. Whipple, but I did tell him I didn't think it would make his clients head for the hills.

Halloween Costumes

Phillip has a friend who has a blow out Halloween party each year. He and his wife go all out and have an amazing party. This year Robyn had to work, so Cara brought a friend. They dressed up as characters from one of their favorite manga series. Phillip went as an LSU fan. I wish I had gotten a picture showing his LSU socks. They really made the outfit. The party was great and tons of people showed up. It was another excellent event.

Waterproofing the Deck

Phillip decided this was the weekend to seal the deck. I wonder why he chooses to do this in the summer, and not only that...he waits until mid day to do it. He doesn't feel the heat like I do, but I think this time he did. I question why he doesn't get up early to do work outside. He tells me he will do things on his time. OK...it is just painful to watch him outside working in the heat when the heat index is around 110 degrees.

He did stop long enough to come in to get some water and to tell me to come and take his picture for the blog.

I Love Me Some Baseball

We don't get the opportunity to watch major league baseball too often. Phillip jumps on any chance to do so. I love baseball too, but the girls are not so thrilled. We went to see the Devil Rays play the Washington Nationals. Our seats were pretty good and the game was great. Robyn started to get into the game and asked a lot of questions. By the end, she said she was starting to like baseball. Cara mostly read her book like she did last summer when we saw the Mets play.

The girls both enjoyed the vast opportunities for people watching. One of the most interesting was this guy with the major dreadlocks. I think those are the longest I have ever seen. Another favorite was a fan who would wave around a broom. This was the final game in a 3 game series with the Nationals, so fans were hoping for a sweep.

The Signature Move

Tonight, I met a couple of friends for dinner. I enjoy spending time with friends, but I also enjoy coming home to see what kind of mischief Phillip and the girls have gotten into. He can usually get the girls to do all kinds of silly stuff to show me when I get home. Tonight, Phillip and Cara had a little dance step they called "The Signature Move". They had a great time showing their move, cracking each other up and being goofy. They tried to get Robyn to join in, but she was interested in standing by me and watching the show. It was like getting a calorie free dessert when I got home...sweet and fulfilling.

Gerson the Grapefruit

Gerson the Grapefruit tree is next. I am not a fan of grapefruit, but Phillip is. Gerson's fruit seems to be coming right along. There were a couple of tiny fruits on the ground, but several still on the tree. I don't know if we will need to put some sort of bird protection on it, as this is the first year we are giving citrus fruit a try. Hopefully they will stay away and we will get to enjoy watching the grapefruit grow.

The Boil

Today was Ye Old Boil. Phillip was so happy. It is his "thing". I was happy to be in the shade. We had a great time visiting with friends and just enjoying the day. The mudbugs were spicy and the sausages and potatoes were supreme. I parked myself in front of the taters and sausage and went to town. Yum. I like crawfish ok, but the potatoes and sausage are my favorites. Last weekend was Gary's birthday, so we put a candle on a cupcake and we sang Happy Birthday to him. It was a great ending to our Spring Break.

Watch out Mr. Trump

Phillip has decided that when he retires, he will become an Ebay mogul. He likes to look around the house and find things "we" could sell on Ebay. I use the term "we" because he doesn't want to learn how to do the listing. He wants to be the one who finds the item, tells you what to say in the listing, and the one who bugs you to find out if there are any bids. He is so funny about it. He gets such a thrill out of a watcher and even more...a bidder. He has roped Robyn into helping him with his latest Ebay offerings. She is frequently without or short on funds, so he appealed to her monetarily. She will get a percentage of the selling price, if she helps him on the front end of the deal. It has worked in her favor about as many times as it has not. I hope they are successful. It is always good to have money in the old Paypal account.

Preparation

Boil King decided that he could not get through this season without having a crawfish boil. So he has planned a boil for Sunday. My job today was to go out and get the fixins. He wanted small potatoes, onions, salt, and sausage. He said he had enough boil seasoning. When I took it out of the panrty to put it in the picture, I see that he must have forgotten he used it earlier. A job tomorrow will be to get more "boil".

Check out my other blog, Cheese and Chocolate. I am holding a Pay It Forward challenge. You might want to enter.

Added later...I stand corrected. I didn't look on the pantry floor. He does have enough "boil".

Poker Night

When Phillip and I were dating and for a long time after we were married, he and his childhood friends would gather and play poker almost every weekend. Sometimes I dreaded those games, because (1) I was the only female and (2) it would get boring after a while watching them play for hours on end. For the first year after we were married, we lived 3 hours away from New Orleans. When we came into town (again almost every weekend), I had the option of going to the games or sitting at home with the in-laws. I choose the poker game. After we moved back "home", the games moved to our house. That was not so bad as I could find entertainment at my own house. Once we moved "across the lake", the games stopped as we were a distance away and the guys had other interests as well.

Ten years ago, Phillip and a couple of friends started a monthly neighborhood poker group. They take turns hosting and usually have 5-6 guys attend each month. This group does not have the sentimental value as the old group of childhood friends, but it is a great group. Several years ago, they decided to run for the neighborhood board. They all won their prospective positions and had board meetings at the poker games. They made some controversial improvements to the neighborhood and the next year, another group decided to run against the "poker group" running the show. The poker group didn't want another term, so it all played out to everyone's liking. Every once in while I hear a story about those "poker guys" who did this and that. I just smile and say "Yeah, I heard about those guys."

Farmer Phil and the Boys

Phillip has a very good friend who is his fishing bud. Bill lives "down the bayou" southwest of here. They have a great time getting up in the middle of the night to get out on the water at the crack of dawn. I have never understood why that would be fun, but that is not really relevant to this story. Bill lives on a ton of land and on part of it he grows several different types of citrus trees. As part of the fish stories we hear when he gets home, we also hear about Bill's orchard. He goes on and on about how Bill can just walk out the door and pick his fruit. You know where this is going...right? Well as you might have guessed, he has decided he will grow fruit trees. Hopefully, sometime this summer we will have lemons, satsumas, and grapefruit. And who are the boys mentioned in the title? The girls thought it would be great to name the trees with male names since Phillip lives in a house of females. Some evenings and on the weekends, he can be found outside doing his male bonding.

The Dryer

For about a month, the dryer has been giving me a little trouble. I have been fiddling with the knobs and that had seemed to have worked. On Thursday, my fixes were no longer working. I mentioned to Phillip that I would be calling the repairman. He said he wanted to look at it. "Mr. Fix-It", as he refers to himself, is not all that handy. He has a lot of great skills, but fixing stuff is not one of his greatest skills. He goes and looks at it, and later comes to me and announces proudly, "Mr. Fix-It has done it again!" I go and look. This is the fix. I have to say it does work for about 12-20 minutes at a time. I can only coax it to work about half of the time, so I have to frequently call "Mr. Fix-It" to come and do his magic. He said that as long as he has rubber bands and knobs, all will be well.

Boiled Shrimp

Phillip loves to boil. We were supposed to have had some of his relatives over this weekend for crawfish.  Since I am not up for company, that was scratched. He was still in "boil" mode, so he decided to boil a small batch of shrimp for just us.  I get a kick out watching him boil.  He loves to get into the whole process of how much seasoning to use, what to put in the boil with the crawfish or shrimp, etc.  He thinks he is Boil King.  Well...he is at our house. The shrimp were great, and the potatoes and sausage he threw in with them were yummy as well.

Good job Boil King!
