Cake Baking with Shelby

Robyn came home this weekend and she and Shelby got together. Whenever they do, a cake is usually made. I love this tradition they started. Robyn and Shelby take turns choosing a cake to make. This time it was Robyn's turn and she chose red velvet. I cannot remember the last time I had red velvet and Phillip had never had it. This cake was the best so far. No mishaps or mess ups. Just yummy cake for all.

Girls' Day

Both Cara and Robyn needed to spend time with their girls. Cara had her peeps over and Robyn had Shelby. Robyn and Shelby did their traditional "Let's make a cake while we hang out" cake. It was a "We Love College" cookie cake. Lots of silliness was shared and the cookie cake was history. I love days like this!

Did Someone Mention Cake?

Let me introduce you to my new best friend, my yarn ball winder. I love, love this contraption. I have been using 2 strands of yarn to knit my hats for chemo patients. I was winding the yarn into a ball and then rolling that into 2 smaller, equal balls (Yes, I know there was probably an easier way, but my dad was an Aggie...nuf said. It's in the DNA). My ball winder winds my yarn into beautiful cakes of yarn that don't roll off of my lap when knitting. I can then pull the yarn from the center and from the outside at the same time. It is so much fun to wind the yarn. The girls think I am nuts having so much fun using this thing, but they don't get it. I am making a yarn cake and cake in ANY form is wonderful. I just love cake. Don't you?

Adventures in Cake Decorating part 2 (or the house didn't burn down)

The girls had a great time with the cake. They began baking the cake while Phillip, Cara and I were at the grocery store. When we were unloading the groceries, we noticed a burning smell. The girls overfilled the pan and the excess was oozing over the top and onto the heating element. What a lovely smell. They also had a little difficulty getting the cake out of the pan. I told them that you can hide all sorts of flaws with icing and not to worry. They had the best time mixing up the colors of icing and using all of the different tips. We had some difficulty with the pastry bags. They were old and split when they tried to use them. No problem, we were able to adapt zip-loc bags. Once Mr. Bear was complete, they loved posing with him and showing off their creation. As you can see, the Squid and Moose hats made another appearance. You cannot decorate cakes without your favorite hat.

Adventures in Cake Decorating part 1

Tomorrow, the girls have a day of cake making/decorating plus movie watching planned with Shelby. Many moons ago, I took a cake decorating class with the intention of making these beautiful cakes for my family's celebrations. I did that a couple of times and found it was so much easier to just buy them from the bakery. Since I had all of this stuff sitting in the pantry, I thought they would get a kick out of using the different tips and mixing up the icing. I looked through the bin of supplies and it all looks good. I will replace the coloring since it is 10+ years old. Tomorrow will be the unveiling of the finished product.
